Abstract

This article aims to identify the cultural elements present in two Deaf communities in southern Chile. The methodology is qualitative, with an ethnographic design, using the semi-structured interview and visual elicitation as information gathering techniques. The participants are 26 Deaf people native to the Chilean Sign Language; 18 men and 8 women, with an age range between 18 and 60 years. The results were organized in a hermeneutic unit with the support of the Atlas.ti software. The main results indicate the similarity in these elements: cultural, emotional, organizational, symbolic and of knowledge. In addition, the emerging category of visuality emerges recognized by both deaf communities as a relevant contribution to the education of the deaf and the urgent need to continue investigating this topic.

Keywords : Deaf; visual; sign language; deaf culture.
