Abstract

GUTIERREZ AVENDANO, Jairo. Historiography of Madness and Psychiatry in Colombia: from Medical Writers to the Critical Perspective, 1968-2018. Historelo.rev.hist.reg.local [online]. 2019, vol.11, n.21, pp.285-317. ISSN 2145-132X.  https://doi.org/10.15446/historelo.v11n21.65660.

This review aims at understanding the historiography of madness, psychiatry and its institutions in Colombia. It starts with the references of the traditional production of "medical writers", during the first half of the 20th century, before addressing the critical perspective of contemporary studies, which includes pioneering monographs, master's works and recent doctoral thesis. This work also covers the contributions of networks and scientific journals that contribute to the academic production and circulation of this field of history, particularly considering the case of Medellín. The documentary tracking methodology takes into account the spatial, temporal and conceptual delimitations of the texts, as well as the types of sources used. The review adopts the same perspectives and trends of the historiography of psychiatry in Europe and Spain and is similar to the taxonomy adopted in Mexico, Argentina and Brazil. The evaluation allows organizing the historiographic production along four lines of research with an important background in Colombia: 1) ethnopsychiatry and psi culture, 2) biopolitics, hygiene and medicalization, 3) social history, and 4) history of health.

Keywords : history of science; social history; cultural history; psychiatry; psychopathology.
