ARENAS DELEON, Nicolás. A Man to Narrate the Nation. Andrés Lamas and Historia de la República Oriental del Uruguay [History of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay]. Historelo.rev.hist.reg.local [online]. 2019, vol.11, n.22, pp.97-125.  Epub 26-Jul-2019. ISSN 2145-132X.  https://doi.org/10.15446/historelo.v11n22.75053.

Andrés Lamas was designated, through a governmental decree, to write Historia de la República Oriental del Uruguay in 1849. The state provided him with the necessary economic and logistic resources to do so. This, added to his broad diplomatic experience and intellectual bonds on a transnational scale, gave him access to several documentary sources and bibliographic material that were useful to produce the piece. Nevertheless, at his deathbed in 1891 - forty years after his designation and assignment - the piece was unfinished and there were no drafts that allowed foreseeing its prompt culmination. Thus, the objective of this article is to analyze the creation process of Historia de la República Oriental de Uruguay, which will help you recognize the characteristics of the historical practice in the 19 th century and tell you about the importance of Lamas in the makeup of the historiographical field of Río de la Plata, thus proving that behind the project's failure was the need - on behalf some of the 19 th century's highly educated elites - to do "preparatory works" that would lay the ground for the historical work of the following generation of historians.
