Abstract

LAZARO-MONTES, Julián. Germans in the Colombian Caribbean: Cultural Life and National Socialism in Barranquilla, 1930-1942. Historelo.rev.hist.reg.local [online]. 2020, vol.12, n.23, pp.51-83.  Epub Nov 30, 2019. ISSN 2145-132X.  https://doi.org/10.15446/historelo.v12n23.79190.

This article identifies the main features of the "cultural life" of German inmigrants comprised of expressions, cultural practices and interactions with the local culture in Barranquilla -the main Colombian port in the Caribbean- in the 1930s. These are relatively unexplored aspects which offer a way to understand the simultaneous processes of integration and differentiation that characterized these foreigners in the Colombian Caribbean. By analyzing the local press, publications of the German community in Barranquilla and documents from security authorities (among others), a parallel existence was discovered of cultural interaction spaces and activities with the host society that contributed to the integration of these foreigners in the local setting, as well as practices aimed at the expresión and dissemination of the German culture, many of them driven by organizations associated with national socialism.

Keywords : germans; national socialism; culture; migrations; Colombian Caribbean; Barranquilla; 20th Century.
