ANDRADE, Mateus. Family, Patronage and Political Alliances: The Social Networks of the Regional Elite, Minas Gerais-Brazil, 1782-1849. Historelo.rev.hist.reg.local [online]. 2022, vol.14, n.29, pp.123-159. Epub 24-Nov-2021. ISSN 2145-132X. https://doi.org/10.15446/historelo.v14n29.93566.
The article examines the family dynamics and the structure of regional disputes in the province of Minas Gerais. It aims to understand the local politics in the Piranga parish and the alliances that forged interdependencies between the center and the peripheries of the Brazilian Empire. The author analyzes the social and political strategies of the electors and their families, and highlights the complex political negotiations between parishes, provincial legislatures and the Court. The methods and procedures of family history and social network analysis are used in the research. Finally, mechanisms of co-optation and exclusion were detected, evident when visualizing the social approach of the elite families in search of consolidating their place of prestige, strengthening the bases of local power and their leadership position in this society in transformation, cementing their patrimonial bases, enhancing their social prestige and their political capital.
