This paper is an inquiry about the essay's particularities and it focuses on Desde la cola del dragón, El whisky de los poetas, Diálogos en el tejado, Machado de Assis y La otra casa. Ensayos sobre escritores chilenos written by the Chilean Jorge Edwards. The articles in these books have the common particularity of showing how the line that separates the chronic from the essay and even newspaper's articles is usually thin and sometimes imperceptible. This kind of indefinition strengthens one of the central aspects of the essay: its substantial diffuseness, which is characteristically expressed through the use of rhetoric elements that are not always maintained along the work. The lability of genre allows the mixture of discourses and shows a kind of subjectivity that expresses itself while valuing the goals searched. In this sense, the essays compiled in these books come out as proof of the work of the essayist and author as a whole.
