Abstract

PINON PERALES, Francisco. The Grotesque Representation in Anime. perifrasis. rev.lit.teor.crit. [online]. 2010, vol.1, n.2, pp.95-113. ISSN 2145-8987.

The theory of the grotesque has been analyzed from very different points of view since its appearance as an aesthetic category. Those perspectives differ from each other on the highlighting of the core constitutive element of the grotesque: either horror or humor. Taking anime -an artistic product of the nowadays global pop culture- as the base of the research, this article concludes that both elements are not only present on most of the grotesque representations but also that they are key to the reception of such an affection, and that the given grotesque representation constitutes itself on a key element to explore and express the feelings of a western society.

Keywords : grotesque; anime; horror; humor; pop culture.
