Late Antiquity absorbed canonical texts with different purposes, including cultivating tradition as an instrument of political restoration and formation of bureaucratic hierarchies, among others. In order to accomplish this, the work of grammarians andrhetoresthat animated the late-imperial intellectual circles was vital. Plautus and Terence, as canonical authors, were carefully studied to illuminate linguistic or philological issues. This fact thoroughly explains why Ausonius includes these ancient playwrights in his work. The present article analyzes the Ausonianvarietasfocusing on the inclusion of Plautus, Terence and Afranius in the work of this renowned author oftogatascomedies.
