Resumen

HERNANDEZ, Yolopattli. NAKEDNESS OF THE VAGRANTS: BEGGARY, VAGRANCY, AND CLOTHING IN LATE COLONIAL MEXICO. perifrasis. rev.lit.teor.crit. [online]. 2020, vol.11, n.22, pp.13-27. ISSN 2145-8987.  https://doi.org/10.25025/perifrasis202011.22.01.

The concept of “vagrants, idlers, deserters” was commonly used in newspapers and official documents during the colonial period in Mexico. In these documents, those terms are equaled with the concept of “plebe” and are associated with people who are constantly criticized by the intelligentsia since they display conducts considered awkward. In particular, the use of a blanket instead of clothing is a common critique, since the “plebe” are visible in public spaces -which they make ugly- such as Alameda, churches and plazas where Mexican elites hang out. Nakedness is interpreted as lack of civility, and null productivity.

Palabras clave : journalism; underprivileged groups; New Spain; clothing; ruling class.
