VITALI, GUILLERMO IGNACIO. INTERTEXTUALITY AND EVANGELIZATION. THE LETTERS OF PORTUGUESE JESUITS IN THE HISTORY OF THE INDIES BY BARTOLOMÉ DE LAS CASAS. perifrasis. rev.lit.teor.crit. [online]. 2021, vol.12, n.23, pp.121-141.  Epub 09-Fev-2021. ISSN 2145-8987.  https://doi.org/10.25025/perifrasis202112.23.07.

In chapters 174 and 175 of History of the Indies, De las Casas transcribes extensive fragments of letters sent by Portuguese Jesuits from Brazil. This exercise of intertextuality supposes a singularity in the general framework of the text, although it received limited attention from colonial studies. I will develop a documentary study (Chartier, Prada) to recognize the probable source used by the Dominican to write those chapters. Then, from an "unfocused" perspective (Cordiviola & Teglia), I will analyze the role these epistles acquire within the historiographical account and their impact in the global shaping a peaceful evangelizing method.

Palavras-chave : Bartolomé de las Casas; material bibliography; colonial studies; sixteenth century; evangelization of Latin America.
