Resumen
ALDAO, María Inés. MISSION, POWER AND DISENCHANTMENT: FRAY TORIBIO DE BENAVENTE MOTOLINÍA'S "CARTA AL EMPERADOR CARLOS V" (1555). perifrasis. rev.lit.teor.crit. [online]. 2022, vol.13, n.25, pp.13-27. Epub 21-Feb-2022. ISSN 2145-8987. https://doi.org/10.25025/perifras¡s202213.25.01.
The "Carta al Emperador Carlos V" has been studied by scholars given the attack of the enunciator to De las Casas and his defense of the Franciscan work. Nevertheless, this is not the first letter written by Motolinía and it is not the only one in this tone: other epistles show the disputes among the different orders and the tense political context of evangelization. In this article I analyze the characteristics that make this letter the most studied text of the conquest and the way accusation, defense and discursive resources used in novohispanic missionary chronicles and these epistles are intertwined.
