Abstract
GAYET, ANDREA. Mother Josefa del Castillo: Subjectivity and Reading practices in the Afectos Espirituales, Cuaderno de Enciso and the Devocionario. perifrasis. rev.lit.teor.crit. [online]. 2025, vol.16, n.36, pp.13-30. Epub Sep 05, 2025. ISSN 2145-8987. https://doi.org/10.25025/perifrasis202516.36.01.
The following paper sets out to relate three works by Mother Josefa del Castillo, the Afectos Espirituales, the Devocionario and the Cuaderno de Enciso, and to analyse her reading and rewriting practice as a construction of her subjectivity as a nun, a woman author and a visionary. The analysis of two major areas, the way in which she reads the bible from an interstitial position -between glossolalia and biblical commentary- and takes up female biblical figures, together with the texts written by women or dedicated to women in the Devocionario and the Cuaderno de Enciso, reveal Josefa's desire to think of her own position based on other women. In line with recent studies, the article proposes a revaluation of the Devocionario and the Cuaderno through concepts such as Foster's "economy of discursive exchange" and Foucault's hypomnémata, so that one rethinks of the figure of the Neogranadine nun.
