Abstract This article reflects about notions of multiculturalism and interculturalism and their application in national and international policies concerning the rights to self-determination, education and language as essential issues for the conservation of indigenous culture. Based on a research carried out in a Centre for Indigenous Education it also discusses the relevance of institutional processes, the curriculum, educational resources and the implementation of Spanish classes according to the existing regulations.
