Abstract

MANSILLA-SCHOLER, Luis Esteban; CASTRO-INOSTROZA, Ángela Nolfa  and  RODRIGUEZ-NIETO, Camilo Andrés. Exploring the mathematical knowledge of fishermen in the bay of Puerto Montt, Chile. Prax. Saber [online]. 2022, vol.13, n.32, e206.  Epub Feb 18, 2023. ISSN 2216-0159.  https://doi.org/10.19053/22160159.v13.n32.2022.12894.

The potential of recognizing and using the mathematics of different cultural practices from each country has been highlighted in the Ethnomathematics Program, in order to strengthen their teaching and learning. In countries such as Chile, many inhabitants are dedicated to fishing. However, the potential of this practice to address the mathematical learning proposed in the national curriculum has not been studied. With the aim of exploring the mathematical knowledge of fishermen in the bay of Puerto Montt, Chile, and following a qualitative methodology with an ethnographic approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven fishermen from this area. Data were analyzed according to a thematic analysis. The results show that fishermen have mathematical knowledge associated with most of the axes that integrate the national curriculum of mathematics in basic education in terms of the study of measurement (conventional and non-conventional), localization (spatial orientation), counting, modeling (ratios between variables and conversions), and estimation (of measurements and of quantity), among others. Lastly, some guidelines are proposed on how to link this knowledge to the national curriculum.

Keywords : mathematics; sea fishing; traditional culture; syllabus; elementary education.
