Introduction: The tool that permits to the profession of nursing to identify its task is the process of nursing, based on the utilization of classifications standardized for diagnosis of nursing, results expected and interventions. The investigation in diagnosis of nursing has evolved in recent years. Objective: Review of the literature to value the development of the research in diagnosis of nursing. Materials and Methods: A search of the literature describes an extensive variety of methodological designs in the research of the diagnosis of nursing. Results: The review of the literature showed studies published to identify the most frequent diagnosis of nursing in the services of attention and in the different spheres of the life cycle. Likewise, diagnosis of nursing validation studies was found. Discussion and Conclusions: The use of a common language based on the diagnosis of nursing, the results expected and the interventions will permit the professionals of nursing to get into focus and to prioritize the plans of attention individualized to the subjects of care. At present research groups of nursing of have developed lines of specific research to investigate in process of nursing and in the diagnosis of nursing.
