Abstract

LEEFLANG, Richard James. Nursing Practice Experience Of A Student From The United States within the Health Care System of Colombia. Rev Cuid [online]. 2011, vol.2, n.1, pp.236-239. ISSN 2216-0973.  https://doi.org/10.15649/cuidarte.v2i1.63.

Introduction: Nursing students that work in countries outside of their own have an opportunity to reflect about the health care system of the visited country and that of their own. This comprehension of the other's culture and health system is important in order to be a better representative of their patients. Material and Methods: This is a reflection article about the experiences of a nursing student from the United States working in the Colombian health care system, comparing some aspects of this system and the nursing education system in a Colombian university and a university from the United States. Results: The student's reflection demonstrates that even though the two universities have similar undergraduate nursing programs, there still exist differences in the area of nursing practice especially in regard to the patient's privacy and dignity due to the differences in the two countries' laws. Discussion and Conclusions: Nurses in both countries, the United States and Colombia, receive a similar didactic education with some differences in the clinical experiences. The health care system and laws of Colombia are not as demanding in regards to the protection of patient privacy and dignity, which can have a negative impact in the patients. With this in mind, the nurses of both countries have the same roles and duties, and perform them according to the laws of their respective country.
