BORRE ORTIZ, Yeis Miguel; CORTINA NAVARRO, Carolina  and  GONZALEZ RUIZ, Gisela. EXCLUSIVE BREASTFEEDING: ¿THE MOTHERS REALLY KNOW?. Rev Cuid [online]. 2014, vol.5, n.2, pp.723-730. ISSN 2216-0973.  https://doi.org/10.15649/cuidarte.v5i2.84.

Introduction: The World Health Organization states that breastfeeding is a habit intimately linked to the survival of the human race since time immemorial. Globally, only 35% of babies are breastfed for the first four months of life. The literature shows that there are still mothers who are unaware of their importance. Therefore, the objective of this study was to identify whether the mothers of a particular locality of Santa Marta, knew the benefits and consequences of exclusive breastfeeding. Materials and Methods: Descriptive, cross-sectional, quantitative study, in which 90 mothers who visited to the Health Center November 11 Santa Marta (Colombia) were surveyed; which were selected by purposive sampling, non-probability. Ethical and methodological aspects to realize the appropriate scientific rigor is preserved. Results: Of the 90 mothers surveyed, 51% are aged between 15-25 years, 30% between 26-35 years and 19% are over 35. 85.6% have adequate knowledge of exclusive breastfeeding. 48.9% know the proper breastfeeding technique, while the remaining 51.1% have no idea of it. Discussion: The results of this study are related to similar studies at national and international levels, which show that although LM is essential factor for the proper development of early childhood, childhood and adolescence, requires that mothers are more educated and better informed. Conclusions: Mothers continue to show high levels of misinformation regarding breastfeeding. Therefore, the development and implementation of education programs that allow this population and educate future nursing mothers is need; specifically to primigravidae and adolescents.
