Abstract

Introduction: Early detection by performing the Pap cytology has been instrumental in decreasing the reliability of indicators of morbidity and mortality of this cancer. The aim of this study was to evaluate the perception of women about cancer of the cervix, through the practice of popular education as a participatory tool. Materials and Methods: This was an action research with a qualitative approach, developed in a Basic Health Unit and the participants of the survey, 15 users of two teams of the Family of the Municipality of Senhor do Bonfim Ba-Health Strategy, who participated in a focus group. Results and Discussion: Through two categorizations was observed that the participants recognize the importance of accessibility of the basic unit, the value of women's health services and maternal and child care. In addition, the participants have knowledge of having a cervical smear, recognizing its importance for early detection of gynecological cancer, saying there is little diffusion, correlating with absence / little popular education held by health professionals. It was also mentioned feelings of insecurity and shame in the exam, even though the importance of this for disease prevention and health promotion. Conclusions: There is a pre-existing knowledge among participants about gynecological cancer, but it is necessary that health professionals constantly work on popular education as a tool of dialogical participation of the subjects.
