Introduction

Currently, a priority is for nursing professionals to improve their productivity through their regular care and good professional performance.

Objective

This work sought to determine the factors that condition absenteeism and its relation to the job performance of nursing professionals who work in critical areas.

Materials and Methods

This was a correlational, cross-sectional prospective study. The study population comprised professionals working in critical areas, conforming a sample of 65 nurses, selected through a non-probabilistic sampling. To measure the absenteeism variable, an 18-question instrument was elaborated and divided into four dimensions, with a reliability index of 0.71. Likewise, for the performance evaluation, a 50-question instrument was created and divided into six dimensions, applied through three measurements, with a reliability index of 0.93.

Results

Absenteeism results: 6.2% had a low conditioning factor in the individual factors dimension; 29.2% achieved a high conditioning factor in the place of work factors; and 89.2% obtained a regular conditioning factor in the dimension of work contents factor. The performance evaluation revealed that, in the self-evaluation, 76.9% achieved a good level. In the peer evaluation, 16.9% achieved a deficient level, while 29.2% reached a good level. In the evaluation by the chief, 15.4% had a deficient level, while 12.3% obtained a good level.

Discussion and Conclusions

Absenteeism had a direct and significant relation with job performance.
