Introduction

Quilombola communities are defined by the particularity of the historical trajectory and the presumption of black ancestry linked to resistance, violence, persecution, and historical domination suffered. The aim of this study was to outline the sociodemographic and epidemiological profile of a Quilombola community and identify socioeconomic aspects capable of affecting their health condition.

Materials and Methods

Cross-sectional study conducted in a Quilombola community located in the metropolitan area of Belém, Pará, Brazil. The sample comprised 130 adults who answered a questionnaire with 45 closed questions related to socioeconomic, cultural, health, food, and lifestyle aspects.

Results

The study revealed prevalence of female gender, low level of schooling, and family income of up to one minimum wage. It was also found that participants had masonry housing, but without basic sanitation in the community leading to habits that are harmful to health, regarding the use of water and disposal of waste. Smoking, alcohol, and sedentary habits predominate, associated with unhealthy eating habits.

Discussion

Data on health, food, culture, and lifestyle were important in the health and disease process of Quilombola families.

Conclusions

The Quilombola community was characterized regarding its sociodemographic and epidemiological condition, identifying socioeconomic aspects that affect their health condition. It should be noted that the problems identified could contribute to health actions being planned and implemented according to reality, considering the social, political, and environmental context of the community, valuing its traditional knowledge and practices.
