Abstract

SALES, Isabela Maria Magalhães et al. Feelings of mothers at the kangaroo care unit and support strategies for nursing professionals. Rev Cuid [online]. 2018, vol.9, n.3, pp.2413-2422. ISSN 2216-0973.  https://doi.org/10.15649/cuidarte.v9i3.545.

Introduction

Amidst the experience of mothers at units where Kangaroo Care Method has been adopted, the nursing team is constantly present and can have a significant role in the reduction of tension and negative feelings generated when newborns are hospitalized.

Objective

To understand the feelings of mothers that are perceived by the nursing professionals of a Kangaroo Intermediate Care Unit and to know the strategies used by these professionals to support mothers.

Materials and Methods

A qualitative research was conducted in a Neonatal Kangaroo Intermediate Care Unit. Data collection was carried out from April to July 2016 through interviews. The data was analyzed through content analysis.

Results

It was possible to find two categories: “Mother feelings that are perceived by the nursing professionals of a unit of kangaroo care method” and “Strategies used by nursing professionals to support mothers”.

Discussion

Feelings of anxiety, uncertainty, and nostalgia expressed by mothers are a source of concern for nursing professionals and should, therefore, be addressed through support strategies.

Conclusions

The participants perceived that mothers might have feelings of anxiety, uncertainty about the care they should give their baby, and nostalgia for their other responsibilities outside the hospital. Among the strategies used by these professionals as support measures for mothers, reception, guidance, teamwork, and empathy were mentioned.
