Introduction

Some clinical situations during child hospitalization require using peripheral Intravenous Therapy by placing intravenous devices. This procedure can cause negative feelings in children and their families, which can be alleviated through the use of didactic and instructional technologies. The objective of this study is to develop and validate the contents and appearance of the “Peripheral Venous Cannulation for Families” booklet with a panel of pediatric specialists.

Materials and Methods

Methodological research on the development and validation of an educational booklet conducted with seven judges using the Delphi method. Data was collected using a structured instrument containing variables categorized as follows: content, language, illustration, layout, motivation, culture and applicability. The Content Validity Index equal to or greater than 0.80 was adopted as the approval value for each assessed criterion.

Results

Seven specialist judges participated in the study; all were female nurses, five hold a master’s degree, one is a PhD and another one a specialist; they work in the fields of education, assistance, research and continued-education in pediatrics. The booklet was validated in the first evaluation round, obtaining a Global CVI of 0.98.

Discussions and conclusions

The judges considered the proposed booklet to be valid in terms of content and appearance, suggesting that this educational resource has the potential to contribute to healthcare education on the Peripheral Intravenous Cannulation for children.
