Abstract
MONTES ROJAS, Gabriel and CERQUERA LOSADA, Oscar Hernán. Distributive Analysis of the Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Quality of Education in Colombia. Finanz. polit. econ. [online]. 2024, vol.16, n.2, pp.375-399. Epub Nov 21, 2024. ISSN 2248-6046. https://doi.org/10.14718/revfinanzpolitecon.vl6.n2.2024.3.
This article studies the evolution and determinants of the quality of education in Colombia during the years 2017 (before) and 2021 (during the pandemic), with the purpose of evaluating the impact of COVID-19 on students' academic performance. For this purpose, the decomposition method proposed by Firpo et al. (2007, 2011) was used to analyze the factors that determine the differential in academic performance through the calculation of counterfactual decompositions for the entire distribution of academic performance; specifically, the 10th, 30th, 50th, 70th, and 90th quantiles were analyzed. It was found that the pandemic affected the academic performance of all students in general, but especially those in the lower part of the distribution. This confirms the hypothesis that the deterioration in socio-economic, family and personal characteristics of the students worsened existing educational inequalities.
