Abstract

CABRERA DEL VALLE, Rodrigo; SALUM ALVARADO, Sara  and  FUSTER SANCHEZ, Nicolás. Older People and Uses of Information Technology: Unveiling Gaps, Senses, and Affections in Valparaíso. Trab. soc. [online]. 2021, vol.23, n.1, pp.197-224.  Epub Oct 29, 2021. ISSN 2256-5493.  https://doi.org/10.15446/ts.v23n1.87702.

The purpose of this concurrent mixed study was to describe and understand the use of the meanings attributed to Information and Communication Technologies by the elderly in the Valparaíso district, Chile. We applied a methodological approach that contemplates mixed data collection techniques. In the quantitative stage, an instrument was applied to a probabilistic sample to measure the use of technologies, evidencing the high relationship between its use and educational level. For the qualitative stage, through focus groups, we addressed the meanings and representations present regarding the use of Information and Communication Technologies. The results concluded that older people value direct personal relationships over those mediated by technology.

Keywords : aging in place; community; information and communication technologies; mixed methodology; older people; senses of use.
