Introduction.

Wheelchair basketball (WB) is one of the paralympic sports most practiced by disabled people (DP) in Chile. Assistive technologies (AT) that provide greater control and mobility are required for its practice; however, the high economic cost of these elements underscores the need to implement more affordable alternatives.

Objective.

To assess the effect of low cost AT implemented by occupational therapists on the satisfaction perceived by WB athletes members of a sports club in Santiago de Chile (Chile).

Methods.

Pre-experimental study with a pre-test/post-test approach conducted on a single study group. The sample consisted of five participants who completed the Assistive Technology Device Readiness Assessment Form and the Quebec User Evaluation of Satisfaction with Assistive Technology 2.0 questionnaire. A descriptive analysis of the instruments was performed, followed by the application of the Wilcoxon test in order to detect statistically significant differences. The intervention process was carried out in six sections, from the presentation of the proposal to the delivery and use of AT.

Results.

The implementation of low-cost AT improved the satisfaction of the WB athletes despite no statistically significant differences were found. The costs of this type of intervention are considerably lower than those of commercial options.

Conclusion.

The positive receptivity of the athletes underscores the importance of considering the benefits and adaptability in the development of AT, highlighting that low-cost personalized technologies can be a key intervention strategy implemented by occupational therapists in sports programs for DP.
