The military forces must face threats with strategies that allow the effective fulfillment of their missions. Technological tools play an important role in formulating strategies, and their development and implementation are key to the advancement of the Colombian army. Therefore, this article presents an exploratory study to detect expectations regarding innovative trends based on the perceptions of active members of the army. A construction of bibliographic networks on general topics of innovation and technological innovation in the armed forces was carried out from the query in the Web of Science database, to know the relationship between authors and keywords. Subsequently, interviews were carried out with the directors of the army training schools and people directly involved with the scientific research process, and a representative sample of active members of the force was surveyed, allowing us to understand their expectations, including the different perspectives that the institution members have. It is concluded that all the studied categories are important and cannot be eliminated or grouped into other(s); in addition, those related to the defense of the community and the territory are of the greatest interest to the study participants.
