Borrowing some ideas from stress theory, social change theory, and economic approach, the objective of this research proposes a comprehensive explanation of criminal trends. Based on a multiple lineal regression analysis, it presents evidence of both the socioeconomic and institutional determinants of crime in Mexico (2015). Three research hypotheses are proposed: the more poverty, the more crimes (rejected); the more unemployment, the more crimes (confirmed); and more security force less crimes (rejected). Findings indicate that total level of crime, recognizes three main predictors: poverty, unemployment, and institutional absence.
