Resumen

QUINTERO GONZALEZ, Julián Rodrigo; RAMIREZ SOSA, Yohana Andrea  y  CORTAZAR AVILA, Angélica María. Waterway transport in Colombia: Operation, Infrastructure, Environment, Normative and Development Potential. Rev. Ciudades Estados Política [online]. 2020, vol.7, n.1, pp.49-68.  Epub 13-Dic-2021. ISSN 2462-9103.

Waterway transport constitutes an axis of development and economic growth in countries with usable waterways, such as the Europeans, where the appropriate operation of an efficient waterway transport has made them more competitive in foreign trade. These developments require that each nation has a clear understanding of its potential in the inland waterway sector, taking in account that the ignorance of these aspects is the main obstacle to an optimum planning, management and operation of this mode of transport. The objective of this article is to provide a perspective of waterway transport in Colombia and its potential development. The methodology is oriented to the study of its origin, progress, its current form of operation, its infrastructure characteristics, the environmental situation and the applicable regulatory framework in the Colombian context. Based on the above, the article provides a perspective about the waterway transport development oriented to the trade, infrastructure and new plans and public policies. It is concluded that this transport mode is highly viable in Colombia, which requires investment in priority infrastructure and logistics services, as well as the development of new public policies.

Palabras clave : operational characteristics; Colombia; hydrology; transport infrastructure; environment; government policy; river and lake transport.
