Abstract

This article aims to present a balance of the studies carried out on the urbanization dynamics of the Amazon in Brazil and Colombia to provide inputs for the development of a research program on these processes in Colombia. The balance has as a reading mesh the concepts of the system of cities, morphology, and urban actors, vital in urban geography. The article highlights the methodological and conceptual challenges presented by the cities of the Amazon to urban studies and official classifications. At the same time, it evidences the need for an alternative spatial imagination that recognizes the networks of rural-urban articulation and the strategies of multi-locality that support these urban formations and the configuration of micro-regions and regional urban systems. The article ends with the perspective of the ensemble as an alternative approach to analyze the complexity of the cities of the Colombian Amazon.
