Background:

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has increased exponentially worldwide; this is a disease that not only affects physically and psychologically to the patients, but also alters their quality of life. The renal area is rather new, and little explored by physical rehabilitation professionals, especially at the Latin American level, so it is necessary to obtain more information about its current state, in order to allow researchers to learn and get interested in it.

Purpose:

This study aims to carry out an analysis of how the scientific field has behaved in relation to rehabilitation in patients undergoing dialysis, exploring the existing bases for new studies and knowing how it has varied between the years 1996 to 2020.

Methodology:

Bibliometric study in which a total of 236 files were identified, which were analyzed applying filters according to objective and theme, resulting in a total of 191 publications on rehabilitation in dialysis patients between 1996 and 2020. To carry out the analyses, the programs SciMAT and Bibliometrix biblioshiny were used.

Results:

The rate of publications on rehabilitation in dialysis patients has increased over time, as well as the authors who have published on the subject, the journals in different categories, and the emerging studies in the area. The network of collaborations that exist between authors from different countries has expanded, with the United States being the pioneers in scientific production related to this topic.

Conclusions:

With this bibliometric study, it was possible to reveal that research on rehabilitation in dialysis patients, although it is a subject that has been growing over time, it can be concluded that there are still more studies to be carried out in order to have a more solid basis on the subject. The findings obtained in the present study provide very useful information for future researchers who are interested in starting to investigate in this area.
