We are proud to share with our authors and readers the good news that on July 6, 2021 we received confirmation from the US National Library of Medicine, accepting the Revista Colombiana de Obstetricia y Ginecología (RCOG) to the Pubmed Central (PMC) database, ensuring the long term hosting and free access to the contents of the Journal in this repository.

For the editorial team that has been consolidating over the past years and which followed closely the nomination process to this renowned digital repository of content (articles) in health science journals, the admission of the RCOG to PubMed Central (PMC) is profoundly satisfactory. This is the continuation of a process which consolidated in 2019 with Medline’s acceptance, with the aim of expanding the visibility of the RCOG, a window for the studies conducted by Colombian and Ibero-American researchers covering all aspects of woman health, including pregnancy, but also the fetal and perinatal health, as well as those affecting the individual and collective health-related rights of women, from different methodological approaches.

Now the RCOG is part of an elite group of Colombian Journals included in PubMed and Pubmed Central, such as Research and Education in Nursing (Investigación y Educación en Enfermería), Colombia Medical and Biomedical (Colombia Médica y Biomédica)1.

With a view to encouraging other Colombian Journals to accomplish these standards of excellence, let’s review the requirements for admission to PMC:

  1. Initial application: submission of a form requesting general information about the journal, including basic data, editorial policies, and the overall editorial practices in place. This information shall be visible in the Journal’s Webpage or publishing platform.

  2. Initial assessment of the application: after submitting the form, the MPC team verifies the information, and if necessary, communicates any inconsistencies or concerns to be addressed by the applicant.

  3. Quality assessment: the assessment is based on a number of parameters to ascertain that the Journal meets the quality criteria required by PMC.

  4. Technical evaluation: this last step in the process evaluates the contents intended to be published in a specific format (XML), in accordance with some particular characteristics for compatibility with the PMC publishing platform.

  5. Pre-production phase: at this point the Journal is required to submit the agreement signed by the legal representative of the publishing company, and the total package of articles that will be published using the XML JATS protocol, together with the corresponding logos and distinctive images of the Journal.

  6. Finally, the contents are published in the repository and are available to the general public 2.

It should be highlighted however that there are some criteria to remain both in Medline and in PMC, such as abiding to the best editorial practices, scientific transparency and integrity, compliance with the COPE, DOAJ, WAME and OASPA standards, and keeping up with the current high scientific, editorial and technical standards; these criteria are constantly assessed and reviewed. Hence we would like to extend an invitation to any researchers and investigators interested in publishing in the RCOG, to comply with this increasingly demanding editorial process which begins with the validation of the requirements for acceptance, complying with the instructions to authors on how to publish the different types of manuscripts, and translating them into English so that these research efforts reach a broader audience and hence reduce the level of scientific dependence in which currently find ourselves.

We want to express our gratitude to Biteca SAS, a company that has joined its efforts to RCOG, for this new feat which makes available our contents to all investigators and readers through the PMC platform.
