MD Diego Aponte Martín1

1 Editor and director, Revista Colombiana de Gastroenterología.

The editorial team of the Revista Colombiana de Gastroenterología would like to extend a warm greeting to all our readers.

This new supplement presents the updates to the practical guidelines on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), namely, the national guidelines for ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.

The Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Ulcerative Colitis in Adult Patients were first released in 2015. Since then, new therapeutic approaches and concepts on treatment goals have emerged, therefore, an update was deemed necessary back in 2019. This work has recently been updated again so that readers interested in the topic can get the most up-to-date information.

Similarly, clinical practice recommendations for the treatment of Crohn’s disease were prepared and released in Colombia in 2017. However, again, due to advancements and new publications, they must be updated.

Both guidelines were developed with the support of the Asociación Colombiana de Gastroenterología (Colombian Association of Gastroenterology) and the Clinical Research Institute of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia.

These highly relevant guidelines were subjected to a rigorous editorial process that included peer reviews by experts in the field, resulting in exceptional reliability and compliance with the publication requirements of our Journal and other international databases with which we have a close relationship.

Dr. Fabian Juliao, a gastroenterologist, internist, and subject expert, deserves special mention here. He has worked tirelessly to develop, publish, and update these guidelines, as well as to promote the study of IBD in our country and abroad.

We hope
