As of 2012, Colciencias is introducing a new standard of indexation and classification of national journals. Until now, such classification was established by criteria such as editorial and scientific quality, amount of articles, periodicity, and visibility. For next year, journals will be classified according to their impact rate, which means the number of times a journal is cited by similar publications. These impact rates are developed by systems of search and indexation of scientific references such as ISI or Scopus. Colciencias considers that journals classified as C should have an impact rate of 1, the ones classified as B, between 1 and 3, A2 between 3 and 4, and A1 more than 4.

In spite of all the efforts of the institution to achieve a high position for Revista Facultad de Odontología Universidad de Antioquia, a current assessment of its impact rate would be under 1, as visibility of articles in Spanish is extremely limited, and therefore we wouldn’t be classified in Colciencias’ Publindex.

We have worked hard to fulfill the requirements requested so far, but the impact rate proposed by Colciencias does not depend only on the editorial board’s direction but also on the visibility and exhibition of our journal among the universe of publications, whose dominant language is English.

We think that the project of Colciencias has serious inconveniences if applied hastily and unconsulted, but we still acknowledge the benefits it brings along. This is why, with the decisive support of the Facultad de Odontología’s administration and Universidad de Antioquia’s Vicerrectoría de Investigación, we gladly introduce our readers and the international academic community the first number of our journal in Spanish and English.

The editorial and scientific committees will continue their hard work to improve the quality of its contents every day and we all hope that the availability of our journal, both printed and electronic, in different databases and in the libraries of many institutes would improve its visibility in the future, hopefully in the near one.
