The cover films were manufactured by extrusion - blow molding. Special emphasis was put on measuring root, stem and leaf length and dry matter content of the plants, the results of which were compared to those obtained from plants sown outdoors. As expected, the cultivated plants exhibited more vigorous growth when compared to that of the plants grown under free exposure. Films additivated with polymers allowing higher percentages of light transmission and haze determined higher greenhouse inner temperatures, which, in turn, promoted biomass production in the plantation. The presence of an infrared blocker in the plastic film formulations prevented the temperature inside the greenhouses from decreasing drastically below the outer temperature overnight. Additives such as the UV absorber SMARTLIGHT RL1000&#8482; and the red pigment IRGALITE BASF® 2BP&#8482;, which increase the amount of red light received by the plants, thus modifying the R:RF ratio, were found to affect the morphology of the studied plants. Although the effect of photomorphogenesis is weak, a slight decrease in the length and area of the tomato leaves could be observed when the R:RF ratio was high.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen Se analizó la influencia de seis tipos de cobertura de invernadero en el desarrollo de la fase vegetativa de plantas de tomate cultivadas (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.). Las películas de cubierta fueron fabricadas por extrusión - moldeo por soplado. Se hizo especial hincapié en medir la longitud de la raíz, el tallo y la hoja y el contenido de materia seca de las plantas, cuyos resultados se compararon con los obtenidos de plantas sembradas en el exterior. Como se esperaba, las plantas cultivadas mostraron un crecimiento más vigoroso en comparación con las plantas cultivadas bajo exposición libre. Las películas aditivadas con polímeros que permiten porcentajes más altos de transmisión de luz y neblina determinaron temperaturas interiores más altas en el invernadero, lo que, a su vez, promovió la producción de biomasa en la plantación. La presencia de un bloqueador infrarrojo en las formulaciones de películas plásticas impidió que la temperatura dentro de los invernaderos disminuyera drásticamente por debajo de la temperatura exterior durante la noche. Aditivos como el absorbente de rayos UV SMARTLIGHT RL1000 &#8482; y el pigmento rojo IRGALITE BASF® 2BP &#8482;, que aumentan la cantidad de luz roja recibida por las plantas, modificando así la relación R: RF, afectaron la morfología de las plantas estudiadas. Aunque el efecto de la fotomorfogénesis es débil, se pudo observar una ligera disminución en la longitud y el área de las hojas de tomate cuando la relación R: RF era alta.]]></p></abstract>
