Biogas utilization from landfills (BUL) is a widely adopted technique in the United States and some European regions. However, myths persist regarding its implementation in Latin American and Caribbean countries, as well as in certain low-and middle-income economies. This article aims to assess the electricity generation potential in Colombia's major cities and highlight the significant contribution of BUL in achieving public policies objectives for SD and climate change mitigation. The study underscores that Colombia undervalues the potential of BUL when formulating public policies, overlooking its substantial impact in fulfilling at least 14 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen El Desarrollo Sostenible (DS) abarca el mejoramiento de la calidad de vida a través de pilares sociales, económicos y ambientales. La utilización de biogás de los vertederos (UBRS) es una técnica ampliamente adoptada en Estados Unidos y algunas regiones de Europa. Sin embargo, persisten mitos sobre su implementación en países de América Latina y el Caribe, así como en ciertas economías de bajos y medianos ingresos. Este artículo tiene como objetivo evaluar el potencial de generación de electricidad en las principales ciudades de Colombia y resaltar la significativa contribución del BUL en el logro de los objetivos de políticas públicas para el DS y la mitigación del cambio climático. El estudio destaca que Colombia subestima el potencial del UBRS al formular políticas públicas, pasando por alto su impacto sustancial en el cumplimiento de al menos 14 de los 17 Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS).]]></p></abstract>
