In general, seeds need to be soaked to start their germination process. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the matriconditioning under the imbibition curve and the physiological performance of two lots of chia seeds with different qualities. The study was performed with chia seeds harvested by small-scale farmers. To estimate the imbibition curve, seeds from both lots were started in the imbibition process on a stainless-steel screen placed in plastic boxes, containing 55.5 grams of sterilized vermiculite and moisturized with distilled water at 100% of their retention capability. The imbibition curve weights were made 0, 2, 4, 8, 16, and 32 hours after the process had started. Simultaneously, in each evaluation period, seeds were submitted to the following tests: germination, first count of germination, plantlet shoot, root and total lengths, emergence velocity index and average time, and accumulated emergence. A completely randomized experimental design was used. It was possible to conclude that the beginning of phase II of germination in matriconditioned seeds varies in function of the chia seeds' lot quality. The matriconditioning contributes to the physiological performance, increasing and accelerating plantlets' emergence.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[RESUMEN El matricondicionamiento permite la hidratación lenta de las semillas, y puede ayudar en la reducción del período de germinación y emergencia de las plántulas. En general, las semillas deben remojarse para comenzar el proceso de germinación. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar el efecto del matricondicionamiento bajo la curva de imbibición y el comportamiento fisiológico de dos lotes de semillas de chía de distinta calidad. El estudio se realizó con semillas de chía, producidas por campesinos locales. Para la confección de la curva de imbibición, con las semillas de ambos lotes, se inició en el proceso de imbibición sobre un tamiz de acero inoxidable colocado en cajas plásticas, que contenían 55,5 gramos de vermiculita esterilizada y humedecida con agua destilada al 100% de la capacidad de retención. Las ponderaciones a la curva de imbibición se realizaron a las 0, 2, 4, 8, 16 y 32 horas de iniciado el proceso. Simultáneamente, en cada período de evaluación, las semillas fueron sometidas a las siguientes pruebas: germinación, primer conteo de germinación, longitudes de brotes, raíces y totales de plántulas, índice de velocidad de emergencia y tiempo promedio, y emergencia acumulada. Se utilizó un diseño experimental completamente al azar. Se pudo concluir que el inicio de la fase II de germinación en semillas matricondicionadas varía en función de la calidad del lote de semillas de chía. El matricondicionamiento contribuye en el desempeño fisiológico, aumentando y acelerando la emergencia de las plántulas.]]></p></abstract>
