Así, el modelo geotérmico de un área será definido cuando exista la información relevante para su concepción. Para esto, se realizan estudios de diferentes tipos, como: geofísicos, geológicos, hidrogeoquímicos y de anomalías de calor. Colombia dispone de importantes recursos geotérmicos asociados preferencialmente con el arco volcánico activo que se manifiesta a lo largo de la Cordillera Central, sin descartar la importancia de las demás localizaciones no volcánicas. El principal uso de energía geotérmica en Colombia corresponde al aprovechamiento de sistemas de baja entalpia en la balneología y el ecoturismo. Actualmente, se exploran áreas de sistemas de media-alta entalpía con potencial de generación eléctrica. El presente trabajo describe los métodos más comunes para realizar exploración geotérmica y evidencia el avance de la geotermia en Colombia, con énfasis en el volcán Nevado del Ruiz como modelo de un sistema geotérmico usado como fuente de energía alternativa. Adicionalmente, se muestra cómo en el proyecto más avanzado del país, el proyecto Valle de Nereidas, en el flanco oeste del volcán Nevado del Ruiz, se encuentran fuentes termales que han derivado en un proyecto geotérmico de alta entalpía. Estos nuevos aportes indican que las fuentes termales están estrechamente relacionadas con un aumento de permeabilidad en las rocas, asociado con la interacción de sistemas de fallas en dirección NW-SE, que son cortados por fallas regionales N-S como la falla San Jerónimo. A su vez, el patrón de circulación de fluidos geotérmicos en el área de interés se propone desde el SEE hacia el NWW, de acuerdo con el patrón estructural de la zona correspondiente al sistema de fallas Nereidas-Río Claro.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract Geothermal conceptual models generally comprise four essential elements in convective geothermal systems: a heat source, a reservoir, a fluid source, and an impermeable rock. A comprehensive geothermal model is developed based on the available data at a given stage, which involves various studies such as geophysical surveys, heat anomaly mapping, geological analysis, and hydrochemical assessments. In Colombia, geothermal resources are predominantly associated with the active volcanic arc along the Central Cordillera, although non-volcanic areas also hold potential. The main application of geothermal energy in the country has been low-enthalpy systems, primarily for balneology and ecotourism. However, exploration efforts are currently underway to identify medium- to high-enthalpy systems with potential for electricity generation. This work outlines common methods in geothermal exploration and highlights the exploration progress in Colombia, with emphasis on the Nevado del Ruiz volcano as a case study for geothermal energy use. Additionally, this work demonstrates how in the most advanced project in the country, the Valle de Nereidas, on the western flank of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano, thermal springs have led to a high-enthalpy geothermal project. These hot springs are related to an increase in permeability in the rocks, associated with the interaction of fault systems in a NW-SE direction that are intersected by regional N-S faults such as the San Jerónimo fault. The circulation pattern of geothermal fluids in the area of interest is proposed to follow the SEE to the NWW, according to the structural pattern of the area related to the Nereidas-Río Claro fault system.]]></p></abstract>
