El 48,3 % del Caribe colombiano experimenta erosión, 33,2 % se considera estable y el restante 18,4 % experimenta acreción. En el departamento del Atlántico, el 55 % de la línea de costa presenta amenaza por erosión alta y media, donde el área de Puerto Colombia es la más crítica. El presente estudio analiza y cuantifica el cambio en la línea de costa entre Tubará y Puerto Colombia por medio de la interpretación de imágenes satelitales desde 1973 hasta el 2024, e integra los resultados con la evolución que ha tenido este sector a partir de los registros históricos existentes (aproximadamente 1600). Los cuerpos de arena ubicados en la desembocadura del río Magdalena migran hacia el suroccidente en favor de la deriva litoral, y experimentan las etapas de establecimiento (D1), rompimiento (D2) y encallamiento (D3-S4), que ocurrieron hasta 1985, y el posterior inicio (D0) o formación de la espiga de Puerto Velero. Estos procesos están asociados con los cambios de la línea de costa en la zona adyacente a la ciénaga de Balboa (Z2), donde se presentan tasas de erosión muy altas (WLRmín = -27 m/año) y se causa una disminución en el área del cuerpo de agua para el 2024 del 75 % del máximo registrado en 1985. El crecimiento de la espiga de Puerto Velero (Z4) se da a una tasa de +119 m/año (WLR) y para el 2024 tiene una longitud aproximada de 5,3 km. En el área adyacente a Cabo Barro (Z5) se presenta una migración del cuerpo de arena hacia el sur, desde 1985 hasta su relativa estabilización en 2010, y se forma una zona con playas protegidas al oleaje debido a la posición actual de la espiga de Puerto Velero.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract The shoreline position depends on multiple geological, oceanographic, climatological or atmospheric, and anthropogenic factors. In the Colombian Caribbean, 48.3 % of the shoreline is undergoing erosion, 33.2 % is considered stable, and the remaining 18.4 % is experiencing accretion. In the Atlántico department, 55 % of the shoreline has high and medium erosion hazard, with the area of Puerto Colombia being the most critical. This study analyzes and quantifies the shoreline change between Tubará and Puerto Colombia through the interpretation of satellite images from 1973 to 2024 and integrates the results with the evolution of this sector based on existing historical records (dating back approximately 1600). Sand bodies located at the mouth of the Magdalena river migrate southwestward due to littoral drift and go through the stages of establishment (D1), breakdown (D2), and stranding (D3-S4) around 1985 followed by the initiation (D0) or formation of the Puerto Velero spit. These processes are associated with shoreline changes in the area adjacent to the Balboa lagoon (Z2), where very high erosion rates are observed (WLRmin = -27 m/year) leading to a reduction in the water body's by 2024 of 75 % less than its of the maximum recorded in 1985. The growth of the Puerto Velero spit (Z4) occurs at a rate of +119 m/year (WLR), and by 2024 has reached an approximate length of 5.3 km. In the area adjacent to Cabo Barro (Z5), the sand body migrated southward from 1985 until its relative stabilization in 2010, resulting in the formation of a beach zone protected from wave action by the current position of the Puerto Velero spit.]]></p></abstract>
