Este estudio presenta un novedoso enfoque para cartografiar discontinuidades estructurales en los Andes colombianos mediante la extracción semi-automática de lineamientos, a partir de modelos digitales de elevación (MDE). Como resultado de dicha extracción, se obtuvo una extensa red de lineamientos con densidades y direcciones preferenciales variables según las condiciones geológicas locales. Las zonas con mayor densidad se localizan en fallas regionales cartografiadas, lo que valida la capacidad del método para detectar discontinuidades significativas. Además, el análisis por celdas reveló patrones espaciales en las direcciones dominantes, que no se aprecian a escala regional, por lo que ofrece un nivel de detalle superior al de los bloques definidos por fallas mayores cartografiadas. Las direcciones preferenciales revelaron el predominio de un esfuerzo horizontal en dirección NS, particularmente en la Cordillera Occidental y zonas asociadas al sistema de fallas de Romeral. Más allá de las interpretaciones geológicas específicas, este estudio demuestra el potencial de la extracción semi-automática de lineamientos para mapear discontinuidades estructurales de forma sistemática y objetiva.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract By leveraging the efficiency and objectivity of automation applied to the Earth Sciences, it is possible to overcome, among other aspects, the limitations of traditional manual mapping of linear structures, which depend on expert subjectivity. This study presents a novel approach for mapping structural discontinuities in the Colombian Andes through semiautomatic extraction of lineaments from Digital Elevation Models (DEMs). As a result of this extraction, an extensive network of lineaments was obtained with variable densities and preferred orientations according to local geological conditions. Zones of higher density are located in mapped regional faults, validating the method's ability to detect significant discontinuities. Additionally, cellbased analysis revealed spatial patterns in dominant orientations that are not apparent at a regional scale, offering a higher level of detail than blocks defined by major mapped faults. Preferred orientations revealed the predominance of NS-striking horizontal stress, particularly in the Western Cordillera and areas associated with the Romeral Fault System. Beyond specific geological interpretations, this research demonstrates the potential of semiautomatic lineament extraction for systematically and objectively mapping structural discontinuities.]]></p></abstract>
