<self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.co/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&amp;pid=S0120-04882003000200007&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.co/scielo.php?script=sci_abstract&amp;pid=S0120-04882003000200007&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.co/scielo.php?script=sci_pdf&amp;pid=S0120-04882003000200007&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[La generación e identificación de híbridos de Brachiaria spp. con altos niveles de resistencia aAeneolamia varia (F) y la caracterización de los mecanismos de resistencia a otras especies de salivazo, son aspectos muy importantes en un programa de mejoramiento de forrajes que se basa en el siguiente ciclo bianual de selección recurrente: a) Generación y siembra en campo de miles de híbridos; b) Selección de los híbridos con mejor respuesta agronómica; c) Evaluación en invernadero y descarte masivo por susceptibilidad al ataque de A. varia (500-1.000 híbridos, dos repeticiones por híbrido); d) Evaluación más detallada de la resistencia varietal a A. varia y a otras especies de salivazo (aproximadamente 100 híbridos, 10 repeticiones por especie de salivazo); e) Selección en campo por resistencia a salivazo y comportamiento agronómico de aquellos materiales que hayan mostrado la resistencia mayor al insecto en condiciones de invernadero. Al comparar las medias de daño entre poblaciones de los dos últimos ciclos de selección, se encontró una disminución significativa (P < 0.05) de 3,2 a 2,3 en una escala de 1 a 5, es decir, un 28% de ganancia en resistencia. Esto confirma la utilidad del esquema de mejoramiento y la confiabilidad de la metodología de evaluación. También se lograron avances significativos en la comprensión de los mecanismos de resistencia de los híbridos de Brachiaria spp. a cuatro especies de salivazo y en la identificación de híbridos con resistencia múltiple a dos o más especies.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[The production and identification of Brachiaria hybrids with high levéis of resistance to Aeneolamia varia (F) and the characterization of mechanisms of resistance to other spittlebug species are very important steps in a Brachiaria breeding scheme. This scheme is based on the following biannual eyele of recurrent selection: a) Production and field testing of thousand of hybrids; b) Selection for agronomic adaptation and performance; c) Qreenhouse evaluation for resistance to A. varia (500-1000 hybrids with two repetitions per hybrid); d) Detailed evaluation for resistance to A. varia and other spittlebug species (ca. 100 hybrids, ten repetitions per hybrid); e) Field testing for resistance and agronomic performance of those hybrids selected for resistance under greenhouse conditions. Comparison of ave-rage damage scores in two consecutive eyeles of selection showed that damage levéis decreased from 3,2 to 2,3 (P < 0.05) in a scale of 1 to 5, i. E., about 28% gain in resistance. These data confirm the reliability of both the selection scheme and the evaluation methodology. Signifícant advances were made in the understanding of differential mechanisms of resistance of Brachiaria sp. to four species of spittlebug and in the identification of hybrids with múltiple resistance to two or more spittlebug species.]]></p></abstract>
