Taxonomy.</font></p>  <hr size="1">      <p>&nbsp;</p>      <p><font size="3"><b><font face="Verdana">Introducci&oacute;n</font></b></font></p>      <p><font size="2" face="Verdana">Los ciempi&eacute;s escolopendromorfos (Scolopendromorpha) est&aacute;n representados en M&eacute;xico por cuatro familias (Cryptopidae, Scolopocryptopidae, Plutoniumidae y Scolopendridae) y 41 especies dentro de 10 g&eacute;neros: <i>Arthrorhabdus</i>, <i>Cormocephalus</i>, <i>Cryptops</i>, <i>Hemiscolopendra</i>, <i>Newportia</i>, <i>Otostigmus</i>, <i>Rhysida</i>, <i>Scolopendra</i>, <i>Scolopocryptops </i>y <i>Theatops </i>(Minelli <i>et al</i>.  2006; Cupul-Maga&ntilde;a 2009a,  2013; Vahtera <i>et al</i>. 2013).  Su taxonom&iacute;a, diversidad y distribuci&oacute;n en el pa&iacute;s se ha abordado en los trabajos  de Saussure (1860), Humbert  y Saussure (1869; 1870), Porat (1876), Kohlrausch (1878; 1881), Pocock (1895-1910), Kraepelin (1903),  At-tems (1930), Chamberlin (1915; 1923; 1939;  1941; 1942a, b;1943; 1944; 1955), Verhoeff (1934), Crabill  (1977), Shelley(1997; 2002; 2006; 2008; 2009), Schileyko  y Minelli (1998), Chagas-J&uacute;nior (2003),  Chagas-J&uacute;nior y Shelley  (2003), Shelley y Chagas-J&uacute;nior (2004), Shelley <i>et al</i>. (2005),  Shelley y Mercurio (2005;  2008), Cupul-Maga&ntilde;a (2007; 2009a, b, c; 2010a, b, c, d; 2011a, b; 2013), Cupul-Maga&ntilde;a y BuenoVillegas (2007), Koch <i>et  al</i>. (2010), Lucio-Palacio (2010), Cupul-Maga&ntilde;a y Gonz&aacute;lez-Salazar (2011) y Cupul-Maga&ntilde;a y Shelley (2011). Se caracterizan por tener 21 o 23 pares de patas, el cuerpo deprimido dorsoventralmente y moderadamente alargado, las antenas relativamente largas con al menos 17 segmentos, y con o sin la presencia  de cuatro ocelos  a cada lado de la cabeza o placa cef&aacute;lica  (Lewis 1981).</font></p>      <p><font size="2" face="Verdana">Los ciempi&eacute;s,  en general, son depredadores que se alimentan de la meso y macrofauna que vive en el suelo (Lewis 1981) y, en ocasiones, de peque&ntilde;os mam&iacute;feros como murci&eacute;lagos (Molinari <i>et al</i>. 2005). A su vez constituyen parte de la dieta de mam&iacute;feros  terrestres y aves (Leopold y McCabe 1957; Sanabria <i>et al</i>. 1995; Cant&uacute;-Salazar <i>et al</i>. 2005); son importantes en salud p&uacute;blica  porque tienen la capacidad de infligir mordeduras venenosas (Shelley  1999); son elementos significativos de la fauna del suelo y la hojarasca de ecosistemas espec&iacute;ficos (Palacios-Vargas <i>et al</i>. 2007) y, dentro de los agroecosistemas, su densidad  puede ser utilizada como indicadora de perturbaci&oacute;n (Bartz <i>et al</i>. 2008; Bautista <i>et al</i>. 2009; Karanja <i>et al</i>. 2009).</font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana">A pesar  de su valor biol&oacute;gico, su diversidad y distribuci&oacute;n  en el pa&iacute;s es pobremente conocida y subestimada (Cupul-Maga&ntilde;a 2010b).  Es as&iacute; que, con la finalidad de facilitar estudios futuros en M&eacute;xico, este trabajo presenta  la primera clave para  determinar todos los g&eacute;neros de ciempi&eacute;s escolopendromorfos registrados dentro del territorio nacional.</font></p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p>&nbsp;</p>     <p><font size="3" face="Verdana"><b>Materiales y m&eacute;todos</b></font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana">Para los caracteres morfol&oacute;gicos espec&iacute;ficos utilizados en la elaboraci&oacute;n de la clave dicot&oacute;mica de los g&eacute;neros, se obtuvo informaci&oacute;n de los trabajos  especializados de Pocock (18951910), Attems (1930), Verhoeff (1934), Crabill (1977), Shelley (1997; 2002; 2006; 2008; 2009), Chagas-J&uacute;nior (2003),vChagas-J&uacute;nior y Shelley  (2003), Shelley  y Chagas-J&uacute;nior (2004), Shelley <i>et  al</i>. (2005), Shelley y Mercurio  (2005), Edgecombe y Bonato (2011) y Kronm&uuml;ller (2013). Adem&aacute;s, para corroborar caracteres se revisaron  espec&iacute;menes depositados en la Colecci&oacute;n  Nacional de Ar&aacute;cnidos  (CNAN) del Instituto de Biolog&iacute;a de la Universidad Nacional Aut&oacute;noma de M&eacute;xico (UNAM), de la Colecci&oacute;n de la Estaci&oacute;n de  Biolog&iacute;a Chamela (EBCH) de la UNAM y de la Colecci&oacute;n  Entomol&oacute;gica del Centro de Estudios  en Zoolog&iacute;a (CZUG) de  la Universidad de Guadalajara. En la anatom&iacute;a  externa de los ciempi&eacute;s  se utiliz&oacute; la terminolog&iacute;a recomendada en los trabajos de Lewis <i>et al</i>. (2006),  Lewis (2009) y Bonato <i>et al</i>. <body><![CDATA[<p><font size="3" face="Verdana"><b>Discusi&oacute;n</b> </font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana">De las 13 especies del g&eacute;nero <i>Scolopendra</i> presentes en M&eacute;xico, <i>S.</i> <i>heros </i>Girard, 1853; <i>S. morsitans </i>Linnaeus, 1758; <i>S.</i> <i>polymorpha</i> Wood, 1861 y <i>S. viridis </i>Say, 1821 son las de m&aacute;s amplia distribuci&oacute;n (Shelley 2002; Cupul-Maga&ntilde;a 2007; 2009c; 2010b, c; 2013). Para el resto de las  especies, consideradas end&eacute;micas de M&eacute;xico, Shelley (2006) estableci&oacute; como v&aacute;lidas a <i>S. chlora </i>Chamberlin, 1942, <i>S. malkini </i>Chamberlin, 1955, <i>S. pachygnata </i>Pocock, 1895, <i>S. pomacea </i>y <i>S. robusta </i>Kraepelin, 1903. El mismo Shelley  (2006), con base en la revisi&oacute;n de las descripciones e ilustraciones originales de las especies, propuso a <i>S. michoacana </i>Chamberlin, 1941 y <i>S. sumichrasti </i>como potenciales sin&oacute;nimos de <i>S. pomacea</i>; as&iacute; como a <i>S. aztecorum </i>Verhoeff, 1934 y <i>S. octodentata </i>Verhoeff, 1934 como potenciales sin&oacute;nimos de <i>S.  viridis</i>; sin embargo, afirma que se requieren designaciones de neotipos para estabilizar los nombres. </font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana">El g&eacute;nero <i>Arthrorhabdus </i>(representado por <i>A. pygmaeus</i>) tiene amplia distribuci&oacute;n en M&eacute;xico y, aunque  anat&oacute;micamente es similar a <i>Scolopendra </i>y <i>Cormocephalus</i>, se distingue claramente de ellos porque  no hay traslape entre la placa  cef&aacute;lica y el primer terguito (Shelley  y Chagas-J&uacute;nior 2004). <i>Rhysida </i>es un g&eacute;nero con tres especies  en M&eacute;xico: <i>R.  celeris </i>(Humbert &amp; Suassure,  1870), <i>R. immarginata </i>(Porat, 1876) y <i>R.  longipes </i>(Newport, 1845).  La dos primeras, a diferencia  de <i>R. longipes</i>, no ostentan  espinas ventrales en el pref&eacute;mur de las patas terminales (Pocock 1895-1910). La diferencia notable entre <i>R. celeris </i>y <i>R. immarginata </i>es que en la primera  especie los terguitos 5 a 21 est&aacute;n marginados (generalmente a partir del terguito  11 o 16) (Chagas-J&uacute;nior 2013), mientras que en la segunda s&oacute;lo est&aacute; marginado el terguito 21 (Pocock 1895-1910).</font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana">El g&eacute;nero <i>Otostigmus </i>est&aacute; incluido en el subg&eacute;nero <i>Pa</i> <i>rotostigmus</i>, en el cual el pref&eacute;mur de las patas terminales carece de espinas y, en los machos, posee proyecciones cil&iacute;ndricas en su base (Attems 1928; Edgecombe y Bonato 2011; Kronm&uuml;ller  2013). Una especie en M&eacute;xico: <i>O. denticulatus</i>. <i>Cormocephalus </i>es un g&eacute;nero recientemente redescubierto en M&eacute;xico (Cupul-Maga&ntilde;a 2009b). Est&aacute; representado en el pa&iacute;s <i>C.  impressus </i>cuya  distribuci&oacute;n tambi&eacute;n abarca  el Caribe y Sudam&eacute;rica. En el territorio  nacional, solo se conoce a la  Estaci&oacute;n de Biolog&iacute;a Chamela, Jalisco,  como localidad espec&iacute;fica de distribuci&oacute;n (Cupul-Maga&ntilde;a 2010b).</font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana"><i>Hemiscolopendra</i> es un g&eacute;nero monot&iacute;pico. Su &uacute;nica especie (<i>H. marginata</i>) se distribuye desde el sur de la costa atl&aacute;ntica de los Estados Unidos hasta el oeste de Texas. En M&eacute;xico se ha registrado en los estados  de Chiapas, Guerrero y Tamaulipas (Shelley  2008).</font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana">Los g&eacute;neros <i>Ectonocryptops</i> y <i>Ectonocryptoides </i>fueron recientemente designados  como subg&eacute;neros de <i>Newportia </i>a partir de la publicaci&oacute;n del estudio filogen&eacute;tico de los ciempi&eacute;s escolopendromorfos realizado por Vahtera <i>et al</i>. (2013). Estos autores  tambi&eacute;n establecieron que la subfamilia  Ecto Ciempi&eacute;s escolopendromorfos: clave g&eacute;neros de M&eacute;xico 289 nocryptopinae, la cual incluye a las dos especies  mencionadas, es sin&oacute;nimo de Newportiinae. El primer subg&eacute;nero s&oacute;lo tiene una especie que es end&eacute;mica de M&eacute;xico: <i>N</i>. (<i>Ectonocryptops</i>) <i>kraepelini</i>; mientras  que el segundo est&aacute; representado por <i>N</i>. (<i>Ectonocryptoides</i>) <i>quadrimeropus</i>, end&eacute;mica de M&eacute;xico, y <i>N</i>. (<i>Ectonocryptoides</i>) <i>sandrops </i>(Schileyko, 2009), end&eacute;mica  de Belice (Schileyko 2009; Edgecombe y Bonato 2011). A nivel mundial, solamente se conoce un ejemplar de <i>N</i>. (<i>Ectonocryptops</i>) <i>kraepelini </i>(3,2 km al sur de la localidad de Tonila, Jalisco)  y siete de <i>N</i>. (<i>Ectonocryptoides</i>) <i>quadrimeropus </i>(Puerto Vallarta y la Estaci&oacute;n de Biologia  Chamela, en Jalisco)  (Cupul-Maga&ntilde;a y Shelley 2011).</font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana">El g&eacute;nero <i>Newportia </i>presenta 11 especies  con distribuci&oacute;n en el pa&iacute;s: <i>N. atoyaca </i>Chamberlin, 1943; <i>N. azteca </i>Humbert  &amp; Saussure, 1869; <i>N. divergens </i>Chamberlin, 1922; <i>N. mexicana </i>(Saussure, 1858); <i>N.  morela </i>Chamberlin, 1943; <i>N. oreina </i>Chamberlin, 1915; <i>N. pelaezi </i>Chamberlin, 1942; <i>N. sabina </i>Chamberlin, 1942; <i>N. spinipes </i>Pocock, 1896; <i>N. stolli </i>(Pocock, 1896)  y <i>N. troglobia </i>Chagas &amp; Shelley,  2003. Todas end&eacute;micas, con excepci&oacute;n <i>de N. divergens </i>y <i>N. stolli </i>(Chagas-J&uacute;nior y Shelley  2003, Cupul-Maga&ntilde;a 2009a;  Edgecombe <i>et al</i>. 2012). <i>Newportia </i>es el g&eacute;nero m&aacute;s diverso de  escolopendromorfos neotropicales despu&eacute;s  de <i>Scolopendra </i>(Chagas-J&uacute;nior y Shelley 2003).</font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana">En el g&eacute;nero <i>Scolopocryptops </i>el s&eacute;ptimo segmento  del cuerpo no tiene espir&aacute;culos (Edgecombe y Bonato 2011). Las tres especies  vivientes presentes en M&eacute;xico: <i>S. gracilis </i>Wood, 1862, <i>S. melanostoma </i>Newport, 1845 y <i>S. mexicana </i>Humbert &amp; Saussure,  1869 (Cupul-Maga&ntilde;a 2009a; 2013), son f&aacute;cilmente  distinguibles por la forma de los dientes de la placa dental o coxosternum, por las suturas paramedianas, y por la espina del pref&eacute;mur de las patas terminales (Shelley 2002; Chagas-J&uacute;nior 2003). Sobre <i>S.  mexicana </i>Chagas-J&uacute;nior (2008) propone revalidar su nombre para referirse  a las especies neotropicales, en lugar de utilizar el de <i>S. ferrugineus </i>(Linnaeus, 1767) que restringe  para especies de &Aacute;frica  occidental. Edgecombe <i>et al. </i>(2012) describieron una nueva especie f&oacute;sil  end&eacute;mica en &aacute;mbar  de Simojovel de Allende,  Chiapas: <i>S. simojovelensis </i>Edgecombe, Vahtera, Stock, Kallonen,  Xiao, Rack &amp; Giribet, 2012.</font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana"><i>Cryptops </i>es un g&eacute;nero para el cual se conocen  tres especies en M&eacute;xico: <i>C. acapulcensis </i>Verhoeff, 1934; <i>C. nautiphilus </i>Chamberlin, 1939 y <i>C. orizaba </i>Chamberlin, 1943. Hace algunos a&ntilde;os, Cupul-Maga&ntilde;a (2012)  identific&oacute; positivamente como <i>C. acapulcensis </i>a un ejemplar  colectado y depositado en 1989 en la EBCH. Con este registro, se cont&oacute; con una segunda localidad  de distribuci&oacute;n para la especie  en M&eacute;xico, adem&aacute;s de Acapulco,  Guerrero, su localidad tipo (Verhoeff 1934). Por otra parte, en las publicaciones de Chamberlin (1939; 1943), tanto <i>C. nautiphilus </i>como <i>C. orizaba </i>son descritas como nuevas especies.  Sin embargo, no se presentan ilustraciones.</font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana"><i>Theatops</i> es  un g&eacute;nero que s&oacute;lo presenta  una especie en M&eacute;xico: <i>T. posticus</i>. Se le encuentra en los Estados  Unidos y en los estados mexicanos  de Baja California, Sonora y Chihuahua. Se caracteriza por tener las patas terminales muy esclerotizadas (Shelley  1997).</font></p>     ]]></body>
