Rhizobacteria act in the plant through metabolic changes and may have direct effects on plant-feeding insects. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of cabbage plants inoculated with rhizobacteria on the biology and behavior of diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae). Cabbage seeds inoculated with 12 rhizobacteria strains were sowed in polystyrene trays and later transplanted into the greenhouse. The cabbage plants with sufficient size to support stress were then infested with diamondback moth caterpillars. Later, healthy leaves suffering injuries were collected and taken to the laboratory to feed P. xylostella second instar caterpillars that were evaluated for larval and pupal viability and duration, pupal weight, and sex ratio. The reduction of leaf area was then calculated as a measure of the amount of larval feeding. Non-preference for feeding and oviposition assays were also performed, by comparing the control treatment and plants inoculated with different rhizobacterial strains. Plants inoculated with the strains EN4 of Kluyvera ascorbata and HPF14 of Bacillus thuringiensis negatively affected the biological characteristics of P. xylostella when such traits were evaluated together, without directly affecting the insect behavior.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen En plantas, la resistencia inducida es una herramienta en el manejo integrado de plagas que permite aumentar las defensas de plantas contra el estrés, pudiendo ser compatible y utilizada con otras técnicas. Las rizobacterias operan en la planta a través de cambios metabólicos y pueden tener efectos directos sobre los insectos que se alimentan de ella. El objetivo de este trabajo fue determinar los efectos de plantas de col inoculadas con rizobacterias sobre la biología y el comportamiento de la palomilla dorso de diamante, Plutella xylostella (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae). Semillas de col inoculadas con 12 cepas de rizobacterias fueron sembradas en bandejas de poliestireno y transplantadas a invernadero. Las plantas de col con suficiente tamaño para soportar estrés fueron infestadas con larvas de P. xylostella. Luego, fueron colectadas las hojas que sufrieron daños y llevadas al laboratorio para alimentar larvas de segundo instar de esta polilla, evaluándose viabilidad y duración larval y pupal, peso pupal y proporción de sexos. Además, la reducción de área foliar fue determinada como un indicativo de la cantidad de alimento larval. También se hicieron ensayos de no-preferencia para alimentación y oviposición, comparándose el tratamiento control y las plantas inoculadas con diferentes cepas de rizobacterias. Fue observado que las plantas inoculadas con cepas EN4 de Kluyvera ascorbata y HPF14 de Bacillus thuringiensis afectaron negativamente las características biológicas de P. xylostella evaluadas en conjunto, sin afectar diretamente el comportamento del insecto.]]></p></abstract>
