(Lepidoptera: Scythrididae) is a serious threat of barley and wheat in Jordan. There is a growing interest in the development of innovative control strategies to minimize the environmental impact of pest management. Little attention has been paid to the use of cultural control methods against the pest, accordingly, this study aimed at investigating the effect of tillage system in controlling S. temperatella. The study was conducted in Karak Governorate during the 2019-2020 cropping season with four tillage types, i.e., 1) no-tillage, 2) moldboard, 3) disk and 4) chisel plows. Three soil depths (15, 30 and 45 cm) were evaluated for each plow type. Data on the Mutah barley cultivar&#8217; infestation percentage, number of larvae, plant height, grain yield weight, straw biomass, and soil moisture were recorded. Our findings emanate from a one-year analysis under semiarid conditions, sandy-clay loam soils and low soil moisture in a barley monocrop system using 2 m2 plot size with 3 replicates. Results revealed that pest infestation and number of larvae were significantly lower in moldboard plow followed by disc plow and chisel plow, and then in no-tillage. Pest infestation and number of larvae decreased significantly with increasing plowing depth. Plant height, grain yield, straw biomass and soil moisture were significantly higher when the moldboard plow was used, followed by chisel plow, disc plow, and then no-tillage; likewise, they increased significantly with increasing tillage depth up to 45 cm.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen Syringopais temperatella Led. (Lepidoptera: Scythrididae) es una grave amenaza para la cebada y el trigo en Jordania. Existe un creciente interés en el desarrollo de estrategias innovadoras de control de minimizar el impacto ambiental en el manejo de plagas. Se ha prestado poca atención al uso de métodos de control cultural contra la plaga. Este estudio tuvo como objetivo investigar el efecto del sistema de labranza en el control de S. temperatella. El estudio se realizó en la Gobernación de Karak durante 2019-2020 con cuatro tipos de labranza: 1) labranza cero, 2) vertedera, 3) disco y 4) arados de cincel. Se evaluaron tres profundidades de suelo (15, 30 y 45 cm) para cada tipo de arado. Se registraron datos sobre el porcentaje de infestación en el cultivar de cebada de Mutah, el número de larvas, la altura de la planta, el peso del grano, la biomasa de paja y la humedad del suelo. Nuestros hallazgos resultan de un análisis de un año en condiciones semiáridas, suelos franco-arcillosos arenosos y baja la humedad del suelo en un sistema de monocultivo de cebada y un tamaño de parcela de 2 m2 con 3 repeticiones. Los resultados revelaron que la infestación de plagas y el número de larvas fueron significativamente más bajos en el arado de vertedera, seguido por el arado de disco y el arado de cincel, y luego en la labranza cero. La infestación de plagas y el número de larvas disminuyeron significativamente al aumentar la profundidad del arado. La altura de la planta, el rendimiento de grano, la biomasa de paja y la humedad del suelo fueron significativamente mayores cuando se usó el arado de vertedera, seguido del arado de cincel, arado de disco y luego la labranza cero; asimismo, se incrementaron significativamente al aumentar la profundidad de labranza hasta 45 cm.]]></p></abstract>
