La pregunta que guía esta investigación es: ¿cómo las condiciones socioeconómicas afectan el gasto alimentario en Colombia en dicho periodo? Para responderla se utilizó la Encuesta Nacional de Calidad de Vida realizada por el Departamento Nacional de Estadística. La metodología siguió una aproximación cuantitativa: análisis descriptivo y modelos de regresión lineal. Para los modelos de regresión lineal se construyeron seis variables dependientes. La primera es la proporción del gasto promedio mensual en alimentos respecto al gasto promedio mensual total de los hogares colombianos. Las otras cinco variables son la proporción del gasto promedio mensual por cada grupo de alimentos (carnes; granos, frutas y verduras; pan; leche; y huevo), respecto al gasto promedio mensual en alimentos por hogar. Las hipótesis que se buscan comprobar son: a) la proporción de gasto destinado a los alimentos en los hogares colombianos se comporta según la ley de Engel; b) hay diferencias en el consumo de alimentos dadas las condiciones socioeconómicas de los hogares colombianos; y c) existe diversificación alimentaria. El artículo está dividido en cinco partes: la primera presenta la revisión de la literatura especializada; la segunda describe los datos y la metodología empleados: la tercera contiene los resultados de este trabajo, y en la cuarta se discuten los resultados. Por último, se presentan las conclusiones. Entre los hallazgos está la comprobación de las hipótesis, pues se descubrió un alto nivel de desigualdad en el consumo alimentario, que incluso se incrementó en el periodo analizado; y se llama al debate sobre los entramados teóricos y empíricos construidos hasta ahora, en la sociología del consumo de alimentos, para comprender las prácticas alimentarias. <abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract The objective of this article is to analyze the relation between socioeconomic conditions and the budget allocated to food products in Colombian households between 1993 and 2014. The question guiding the research was: how do socioeconomic conditions affect food expenditure in Colombia that period? To answer that question, we used the national Quality of Life Survey, carried out by the National Department of Statistics. The methodology used was quantitative: descriptive analysis and linear regression models. Six dependent variables were built for the regression models. The first is the ratio of average monthly expenditure on food products to the average total monthly expenses of Colombian households. The other five variables are the ratio of average monthly expenditure by food group (meats; grains; fruits and vegetables; bread; milk; and eggs) to the average monthly expenditure on food per household. The hypotheses to be confirmed are: a) the proportion of the budget allocated to food products in Colombian households behaves according to Engel's Law; b) the differences in food consumption depend on the socioeconomic conditions of Colombian households; and c) there is food diversification. The article is divided into five sections; the first provides a review of specialized literature; the second describes the data and methodology used; the third presents the results of the study; and the fourth discusses the results. The last section offers conclusions. Findings include confirmation of the hypotheses, since a high level of inequality in food consumption was revealed, which even increased during the period analyzed. The article calls for debate regarding the theoretical and empirical frameworks built to date in the sociology of food consumption, in order to understand food practices. <abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="pt"><p><![CDATA[Resumo O objetivo deste artigo é analisar a relação entre as condições socioeconómicas e o gasto destinado aos alimentos nos lares colombianos, entre 1993 e 2014. A pergunta que orienta esta pesquisa é: como as condições socioeconómicas afetam o gasto alimentar na Colômbia nesse período? Para responde-la, foi utilizada a Pesquisa Nacional de Qualidade de Vida, realizada pelo Departamento Nacional de Estatística. A metodologia seguiu uma aproximação quantitativa: análise descritiva e modelos de regressão linear. Para os modelos de regressão linear, foram construídas seis variáveis dependentes. A primeira é a proporção do gasto médio mensal em alimentos em comparação ao gasto médio mensal total dos lares colombianos. As outras cinco variáveis são a proporção do gasto médio mensal por cada grupo de alimentos (carnes, grãos, frutas e verduras, pão, leite e ovo), em relação ao gasto médio mensal em alimentos por lar. As hipóteses que se buscam comprovar são: a) a proporção de gasto destinado aos alimentos nos lares colombianos se comporta segundo a Lei de Engel; b) há diferenças no consumo de alimentos tendo em vista as condições socioeconómicas dos lares colombianos; c) existe diversificação alimentar. Este artigo está dividido em cinco partes: a primeira apresenta a revisão da literatura especializada; a segunda descreve os dados e a metodologia empregados; a terceira contém os resultados deste trabalho e, na quarta, são discutidos os resultados. Por último, são apresentadas as conclusões. Entre os resultados, está a comprovação das hipóteses, já que se descobriu um alto nível de desigualdade no consumo alimentar que, inclusive, aumentou no período analisado; e faz-se uma chamada para o debate sobre as estruturas teóricas e empíricas construídas até agora na sociologia do consumo de alimentos para compreender as práticas alimentares.
