Existe evidencia suficiente sobre la preocupación en el mundo por el aumento en los próximos años en la carga de morbilidad por diabetes mellitus, cuyo impacto en el comportamiento epidemiológico de la tuberculosis conlleva mayor incidencia de casos, así como peores desenlaces tras el tratamiento, mayor mortalidad y recaídas.  Objetivo: establecer la prevalencia de tuberculosis latente en pacientes diabéticos del servicio de medicina interna de una institución de salud en la ciudad de Bogotá, D.C, Colombia.  Métodos: estudio de corte transversal para establecer la prevalencia de tuberculosis latente en pacientes con diabetes mellitus. Se analizó una muestra de pacientes, a quienes se les realizó la prueba de tuberculina PPD 5 U leída a las 72 horas, considerándose positiva una induración mayor de 10 mm. Se excluyeron pacientes con antecedente de tuberculosis activa o con factores de riesgo adicionales para infección por Micobacterium tuberculosis.  Resultados: se incluyeron 69 pacientes mayores de 18 años. La mediana de edad fue de 67 años, 54% fueron mujeres. La prueba se consideró positiva en 24 pacientes, encontrándose una prevalencia de 35%. De los pacientes con diagnóstico de tuberculosis latente, 63% eran mujeres, se observó que 67% requerían insulina para el control de la diabetes y 58% tenían algún grado de afección renal.  Conclusión: existe una alta prevalencia de tuberculosis latente en pacientes con diabetes mellitus en una institución hospitalaria de la ciudad de Bogotá, se requieren estudios adicionales con mayor población de diabéticos que comparen dicha prevalencia con la referenciada en la población general y establezcan posibles factores de riesgo adicionales para el diagnóstico de tuberculosis latente como la necesidad de requerir insulina y el grado de compromiso renal (Acta Med Colomb 2017; 42: 165-171).]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  Introduction: patients with diabetes mellitus constitute a group with higher rates of tuberculosis than the general population. There is sufficient evidence of concern in the world over the increase in the burden of diabetes mellitus morbidity in the coming years, whose impact on the epidemiological behavior of tuberculosis leads to a higher incidence of cases, as well as worse outcomes after treatment, higher mortality and relapses.  Objective: to establish the prevalence of latent tuberculosis in diabetic patients of the Internal Medicine service of a health institution in the city of Bogotá, D.C, Colombia.  Methods: cross-sectional study to establish the prevalence of latent Tuberculosis in patients with diabetes mellitus. A sample of patients who were tested for PPD 5 U tuberculin read at 72 hours considering positive an induration greater than 10 mm was analyzed. Patients with a history of active tuberculosis or with additional risk factors for Micobacterium tuberculosis infection were excluded.  Results: 69 patients older than 18 years were included. The median age was 67 years, 54% were women. The test was considered positive in 24 patients, with a prevalence of 35%.
