ABSTRACT

In the Aburrá Valley there are few rocks that are adequate for carving stones, so this art was poorly developed in the area. During Colonial times, the only materials used as carving stones were the compact laterite found in the Northern part of the valley, employed mainly in the frontispiece of the Veracruz Hermitage, and a chloriticactinolitic schist, called the "blue stone" by the chroniclers of that time (Benítez, 1988), used mainly in the frontispiece of the present San Ignacio Church. According to this chronicler, the blue stone was obtained initially in a zone that could correspond to the present Boston district, although most of it was brought later from the Volador Hill. The chloriticactinolitic shist is found in several places of the valley immediately under the Medellín Metadunite and over the Santa Elena Amphibolite, intercalated with the amphibolites of El Picacho Metabasites, corresponding to an atypical metamorphic sole developed when the dunite was thrusted over the Santa Elena Amphibolites probably at the end of the Paleozoic (Restrepo, 2003).

Good outcrops of this schist are found near Rodas Creek, east of the town of Bello. The laterite used in the Veracruz Hermitage corresponds to the weathering product of basic and ultrabasic rocks in the northern part of the Aburrá Valley. In the 1980´s the laterite was once again quarried and the columns that surrounded the parvis of the Veracruz Church could be rebuilt. Also, for some time it was a popular façade material in Medellín. It is a curiosity that both of these rocks are associated with the basic and ultrabasic bodies near Medellín.

KEY WORDS: Working stone, Laterita, Blue stone, Schist cloriticactinolític, Aburrá Valley, Medellín, Antioquia, Colombia.
