Aceptado: 27/07/2012.</p> <hr size="1">     <p>La enfermedad cardiovascular contribuye de manera significativa a la morbilidad y mortalidad en la poblaci&oacute;n colombiana (1). En este sentido, el s&iacute;ndrome metab&oacute;lico hace referencia a un conjunto de condiciones que duplica el riesgo de sufrir enfermedad cardiovascular, independientemente de otros factores de riesgo (2). </p>       <p>Para detectar el s&iacute;ndrome en menci&oacute;n se han establecido diferentes criterios (3-5). El m&aacute;s usado fue publicado en el tercer reporte del National Cholesterol Education Program Expert Panel on Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Cholesterol in Adults (Adult Treatment Panel III criteria-ATP III). M&aacute;s recientemente, la International Diabetes Federation (IDF), la American Heart Association, la National Heart, Lung, el Blood Institute, entre otras organizaciones, colaboraron para publicar un grupo de criterios diagn&oacute;sticos unificados (6), consenso que permitir&aacute; estimar con m&aacute;s precisi&oacute;n la verdadera prevalencia de este s&iacute;ndrome en las diferentes poblaciones. </p>       <p>En cuanto al estudio de Navarro, es conveniente destacar varios datos. De acuerdo con la definici&oacute;n de s&iacute;ndrome metab&oacute;lico propuesta por la IDF, en su serie casi 50% de los adultos fueron clasificados en s&iacute;ndrome metab&oacute;lico. Esta prevalencia supera ampliamente aquella reportada en los Estados Unidos de Am&eacute;rica en donde, a trav&eacute;s del uso de esta misma definici&oacute;n, se encontr&oacute; una de 39% (7). Al aplicar la definici&oacute;n del ATP III, la prevalencia local de s&iacute;ndrome metab&oacute;lico, de 20,2%, es superior a la reportada en Canad&aacute; (19,1%) y en Australia (19,5%). Entretanto, la alta frecuencia de s&iacute;ndrome metab&oacute;lico en nuestra poblaci&oacute;n es similar a la de otras regiones de Am&eacute;rica Latina, y si bien no hay datos de todos los pa&iacute;ses, las prevalencias de s&iacute;ndrome metab&oacute;lico encontradas en los estudios efectuados, son consecuentes entre pa&iacute;ses latinoamericanos y dependen de la definici&oacute;n que se us&oacute;, de los rangos de edad seleccionados, de la proporci&oacute;n hombres/mujeres y del tipo de poblaci&oacute;n (urbana, rural, aborigen). En t&eacute;rminos generales, puede afirmarse que en Latinoam&eacute;rica una de cada tres o cuatro personas mayores de veinte a&ntilde;os, cumple criterios para diagn&oacute;stico de s&iacute;ndrome metab&oacute;lico, seg&uacute;n sea la definici&oacute;n empleada (8).</p>       ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p>En el mismo estudio, al igual que en series m&aacute;s grandes (9-10), el factor de riesgo m&aacute;s frecuente fue la obesidad abdominal. La importancia de la obesidad como factor de riesgo en Latinoam&eacute;rica puede estar relacionada con la reciente y r&aacute;pida transici&oacute;n experimentada en la regi&oacute;n. A la par, la mejor&iacute;a en las condiciones de vida ha estado asociada con el incremento en la expectativa de vida, la urbanizaci&oacute;n y la obesidad (10).</p>       <p>La carga de obesidad abdominal, el colesterol HDL bajo y la hipertrigliceridemia entre una poblaci&oacute;n joven como la analizada por Navarro, es especialmente preocupante dado que el riesgo cardiovascular aumenta con la edad. Estos resultados deben motivar para intervenir y tomar medidas de salud p&uacute;blica tendientes a reducir el riesgo entre adultos j&oacute;venes, pues cabe recordar que cada componente del s&iacute;ndrome metab&oacute;lico responde a cambios en el estilo de vida.  </p>   <font size="3" face="Verdana"><b>Bibliograf&iacute;a</b></font>       <!-- ref --><p>1.
