Las alteraciones metabólicas del músculo esquelético en las extremidades son un contribuyente.  Objetivo: Evaluar la asociación entre la fuerza de prensión y la capacidad cardiorrespiratoria con consumo máximo de oxígeno (VO2p) en pacientes con IC con fracción de eyección reducida.  Métodos: Estudio observacional transversal. Se incluyeron adultos con IC con fracción de eyección &lt; 50% con tratamiento médico óptimo y una prueba cardiopulmonar. Los datos de la capacidad cardiorrespiratoria se obtuvieron de las pruebas de ergoespirometría. La fuerza de prensión se evaluó con un dinamómetro Jamar. Se utilizó el coeficiente de correlación de Pearson con un nivel de significancia estadística p &lt; 0.05.  Resultados: Se evaluaron 33 participantes. La edad promedio fue de 60.5 años (DE: 9.54); el 39.3% eran mujeres. La principal etiología fue la cardiopatía isquémica (43%). La fracción de eyección del ventrículo izquierdo media fue 31.5% (DE: 9.7). El VO2p promedio fue 15.1 ml/kg/min (DE: 4.5) y el porcentaje del VO2p predicho fue 55.5% (DE: 19.3). Se encontró una correlación moderada entre la fuerza absoluta de prensión manual y el VO2p (r = 0.454; p = 0.008). No se encontró asociación al estratificar por terciles de NT-proBNP.  Conclusiones: Existe una correlación positiva moderada entre la fuerza de prensión y el VO2p. Los resultados sugieren medir la fuerza de prensión dentro de la evaluación rutinaria de pacientes con IC con fracción de eyección reducida.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  Introduction: Individuals with heart failure (HF) report exercise limitation that is associated with lower quality of life. Metabolic alterations at the skeletal muscle at the extremities level are a contributor.  Objective: To evaluate the association between handgrip strength and cardiorespiratory capacity with peak oxygen consumption (VO2p) in patients with HF with reduced ejection fraction.  Methods: Cross-sectional observational study. Adults with HF with ejection fraction &lt; 50% with optimal medical therapy and a cardiopulmonary exercise test were included. Cardiorespiratory capacity data were obtained from ergospirometry tests. Handgrip strength was assessed with a Jamar dynamometer. The Pearson correlation coefficient was used with a level of statistical significance p &lt; 0.05.  Results: Thirty-three participants were evaluated. The average age was 60.5 years (SD: 9.54), and 39.3% were women. The main etiology was ischemic heart disease (43%). The mean left ventricular ejection fraction was 31.5% (SD: 9.7). The average VO2p was 15.1 ml/kg/min (SD: 4.5), and the percentage of predicted VO2p was 55.5% (SD: 19.3). A moderate correlation was found between absolute handgrip strength and VO2p (r = 0.454; p = 0.008). No association was found when stratifying by NT-proBNP tertiles.  Conclusions: There is a moderate positive correlation between handgrip strength and VO2p. These results suggest measuring handgrip strength within the routine evaluation of patients with HF with reduced ejection fraction.]]></p></abstract>
