Primary lactase deficiency is the most common cause of lactose intolerance and malabsorption in adults. The lactose hydrogen breath test (HBT) is a routinely used diagnostic tool for this condition.  Methodology: All lactose hydrogen breath tests (HBTs) conducted between August 2020 and September 2023 at the Gastropack medical center in Cartagena were reviewed. These tests were performed on patients presenting with symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and diarrhea during gastroenterology consultations. Medical records were analyzed, and all clinical and sociodemographic variables were documented to characterize the population with lactose intolerance.  Results: Out of 397 hydrogen breath tests performed between August 2020 and September 2023, 62 were identified as lactose HBTs. Of these, 24.4% were female patients, with an average age of 47 years. The most common symptoms included abdominal pain (71%), bloating (66.1%), diarrhea (30%), and flatulence (29%). Additionally, 38.7% of patients had a prior diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Overall, 51.6% of the tests were positive for lactose intolerance. Among IBS patients, 44% tested positive for lactose intolerance. No statistically significant differences were found between patients with and without lactose intolerance.  Conclusion: This study did not identify specific factors associated with lactose intolerance. Although the sample size was relatively small, performing lactose hydrogen breath tests is recommended in patients with suggestive symptoms and in those with conditions that share similar symptoms, such as IBS. This approach can help prevent unnecessary dietary restrictions that may negatively impact patients&#8217; quality of life and nutritional status.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen  Introducción:  La prevalencia estimada de intolerancia a la lactosa a nivel mundial es de 68% y en Colombia, hasta del 59%. La deficiencia primaria de lactasa es la causa más común de intolerancia y malabsorción de lactosa en los adultos. La determinación del hidrógeno espirado con sobrecarga de lactosa es una prueba utilizada de rutina para diagnosticar esta afección.  Metodología:  Se identificaron todas las pruebas de hidrógeno espirado con sobrecarga de lactosa (PHESG) realizadas entre agosto de 2020 y septiembre de 2023 en pacientes que acudieron a consulta de gastroenterología en el centro médico Gastropack, en la ciudad de Cartagena, por síntomas de dolor abdominal, distensión y diarrea. Se analizaron todas las historias clínicas y se registraron todas las variables clínicas y sociodemográficas con el objetivo de caracterizar la población con intolerancia a la lactosa.  Resultados:  De 397 pruebas de hidrógeno espirado realizadas entre agosto de 2020 y septiembre de 2023, se identificaron 62 PHESG; el 24,4% correspondía a mujeres, y la edad promedio fue de 47 años. Los pacientes presentaron dolor abdominal en el 71% de los casos, distensión abdominal en el 66,1%, diarrea en el 30%, flatulencias en el 29% y diagnóstico previo de síndrome de intestino irritable en el 38,7%. El 51,6% de las pruebas fueron positivas. El 44% de los pacientes con síndrome de intestino irritable presentaron intolerancia a la lactosa. No se encontró una diferencia estadísticamente significativa entre los pacientes con y sin intolerancia a la lactosa.  Conclusión:  En el presente estudio no se identificaron factores asociados a la intolerancia a la lactosa. Aunque la cantidad de pacientes no es muy grande, se recomienda la realización PHESG en los pacientes con síntomas sugestivos de esta afección y enfermedades con síntomas similares como el síndrome de intestino irritable, con el fin de evitar restricciones dietéticas innecesarias que podrían afectar la calidad de vida y el estado nutricional de los pacientes afectados.]]></p></abstract>
