In Colombia, its prevalence exceeds that of Crohn&#8217;s disease, and adherence to clinical practice guidelines remains uncertain, making regional epidemiological characterization essential.  Objective: To identify clinical patterns, histoendoscopic findings, and therapeutic approaches in patients with UC at a referral center in Barranquilla, Colombia, in 2024.  Methods:  A retrospective descriptive case series was conducted, including 49 adults with histologically confirmed UC treated at a referral center in the Colombian Caribbean region during 2024. Sociodemographic, clinical, endoscopic, histological, and therapeutic variables were collected and analyzed.  Results:  A total of 49 patients were evaluated (mean age: 53.9 years), with a predominance of females and urban residents. Low consumption of alcohol, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and oral contraceptives was observed. The absence of prior appendectomy and the presence of conditions such as anxiety and depression were notable findings. Inflammatory activity assessed by acute-phase reactants and rectal bleeding were frequent. Anatomical extension predominantly corresponded to left-sided colitis and pancolitis, and endoscopic severity was mainly classified as Mayo score 2. Monotherapy with 5-ASA was the most commonly used regimen, with a transition toward combination therapy as endoscopic severity increased and more specific therapeutic regimens were required.  Conclusions: The findings highlight heterogeneity in the management of UC and a discordance between clinical and endoscopic severity classifications. Integrating demographic, clinical, and histoendoscopic data is essential to optimize treatment strategies and clinical outcomes within the Colombian healthcare context.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen  Introducción:  La colitis ulcerativa (CU) muestra un aumento global en países en desarrollo. En Colombia, su prevalencia supera a la enfermedad de Crohn y la adherencia a guías clínicas es incierta, por lo que es vital caracterizar el perfil epidemiológico regional.  Objetivo:  Identificar patrones clínicos, hallazgos histoendoscópicos y el abordaje terapéutico en pacientes con CU en un centro de referencia de Barranquilla, Colombia, en 2024.  Métodos:  Serie de casos descriptiva retrospectiva que incluyó a 49 adultos con diagnóstico histológico confirmado de CU atendidos en un centro de referencia del Caribe colombiano durante 2024, con recolección de variables sociodemográficas, clínicas, endoscópicas, histológicas y terapéuticas.  Resultados:  Se estudiaron 49 pacientes (edad media: 53,9 años), con predominio femenino y residentes urbanos. Se observó un bajo consumo de alcohol, antiinflamatorios no esteroideos y anticonceptivos orales. Fueron relevantes la ausencia de apendicectomía y la presencia de trastornos como ansiedad y depresión. La actividad inflamatoria por reactantes de fase aguda y la rectorragia fueron hallazgos frecuentes. Predominó la extensión anatómica tipo colitis izquierda/pancolitis y la gravedad endoscópica según el puntaje de Mayo 2. La monoterapia con 5-ASA fue el esquema más común, y se evidenció una transición hacia politerapia conforme aumentó la gravedad endoscópica y regímenes específicos.  Conclusiones:  Los hallazgos destacan heterogeneidad en el manejo de la CU y discordancia entre las clasificaciones de gravedad clínica y endoscópica. Es fundamental integrar datos demográficos, clínicos e histoendoscópicos para optimizar el tratamiento y los desenlaces en el contexto colombiano.]]></p></abstract>
